Info Fluency - Searching and/or Gathering Information
Searching and gathering for information can be centered around 3 questions/areas;
- Why are you searching for information?
- What information are you searching for?
- How are you searching for information?
- What do you do with the information you find?
Looking for information.
The traditional way to search is through major search engines. Most information is found and gathered this way. They can be used for effective searching, but search results are becoming less relevant. This can be manipulated some by using advanced settings or preferences.
Google
Google Preferences gives you a way to filter (or not) your search results
Google Subscribed Links let you customize Google search to show special results from sources of your choice.
Yahoo
Yahoo's advanced features does similar stuff as Google Preferences.
Yahoo Preferences overlaps their advanced features in a way, again similar to Google Preferences.
However, there are many more ways to search for information. Search engines are build around content, for example a flickr search, and some actually present search results in a different way, like Cuil
CHris, I think it might be fun to also take a look at secialized collections and searching enviornments. Lets talk about finding the right tool to find the right info here as well, it is a skill that produces better results then simple 'google'
-I'm working on that, this is just a start. There are many search enngines in many different forms to provide content and or specific serahcing like just video, or audio, etc. I'll put it in the Wiki as soon as I can get it in here.
