HIST 100X Online Example

How do I begin this course?

To receive credit for this web-based independent learning section of Hist 100X, you will need to do three things:

  1. Complete ten written assignments -- five from the options under each course unit;
  2. least one assignment submission must respond to one of the assigned memoirs (options 14-16);
  3. Take both a midterm and a final exam

Students will need access to some sort of word processing software (microsoft word, textpad, notepad, etc.) to complete written assignments. Files should be saved as rich text format (RTF) when sent to the instructor.

All written assignments must be submitted using the digital dropbox. Both exams must be proctored and a paper copy of the exam must be mailed or faxed to the CDE for grading.

Written assignments will be returned to you with comments via the digital dropbox and your score will be entered in the blackboard gradebook.

You may only submit ten lessons. Submitting more lessons will not earn bonus credit. Credit will only be given for the first five lessons submitted from each unit.

Geography of the Course First Do The Reading: There are lessons posted that correspond to sections in your textbook and with assignments. Even though you will not be completing all of the assignments available, it's still a good idea to do all of the reading because the information is useful and is likely to be included in your final exam. For the final, you will be expected to be familiar with all the types of writing discussed in this class.

Then Do An Assignment: There are four components to this class: the shorter assignments, the longer assignments, the formal report, and the oral presentations. Each one has a section when you click the assignments button. You get to choose which assignments you do, and which order you do them in. However, in most cases it will make sense to do the preparatory assignments before the formal report.

You will do five shorter assignments, two longer assignments, one formal report, two presentations, and four peer reviews. These can be handed in using the Digital Drop Box.

The Discussion Board: It's here for your benefit. Since you don't meet with the other students, the discussion board is the place where you can get together and talk about what's going on in the class. You will also post your presentations there.

When you finish the assignments, you will take the final exam at the University or at another proctored location (like a library). Look on the Assignments page for a link to order your final.
