Making Contact Assignment Ideas:

  • Complete personal profile sheet and send through email, through the assignment feature in Blackboard, or through the discussion board. The goal is to get students emerged into the course content and learn a little bit about how the course is going to work. You'll want them to get used to sending email and to using the assignment feature in Blackboard for when they submit their homework. If you are going to use the discussion board this is a good introduction to get them used to the process.
  • Have students create a Home Page in Blackboard. Use this process:

Example

Introduce yourself to the Class
Go to the Course Tools link in the Tools menu to create a Homepage.
Use the page to introduce yourself to your fellow students and your instructor. (Add a couple of specific questions that might pertain to your course that might be of interest to the students, i.e., Do you live near the ocean? Have you been on the ocean for recreation, travel or fishing? are questions from an Oceanography course)
Don't forget to upload a picture of yourself or something that you feel represents you...
Finally, check out your fellow students' pages by using the "Student Pages" link to the left. Click on "List All" students and select their names.

  • Syllabus Quiz
Set up an auto-graded quiz that asks questions about your course syllabus or course introduction. Give the quiz some points so students are motivated to complete it.
  • Blackboard Scavanger Hunt
Set up a quiz that asks questions about the organization and structure of your Blackboard class. Think about the features and or technologies you want your students to use in the class and ask questions, request resources or urls, or have them attach short sample files giving them an introduction to some of the tasks they might be performing in the course. For example: if you want your students to create presentations with audio files - have them create an introductory presentation and post it to the discussion board.
  • Schedule contract
If you don't have weekly deadlines in your course you most likely have some benchmarks for students to reach throughout the semester. Create a schedule of lessons and have your students plan out their semester and add dates for when they expect to submit their assignments.
Example:

START I began this course on ____________
Planned Completion Date ____________
 SUBMISSION DATES
GOALDEADLINEACTUAL
