  • eLearn Magazine is a free online publication featuring articles on best practices, tutorials, case studies, reviews, research papers, and blogs. You can subscribe to it by e-mail or RSS feed to receive updates.
  • International Society for Technology in Education is a well-known member association for educators and advocates of instructional technology. They host the annual National Educational Computing Conference. There is a wealth of resources available through membership including professional development, funding opportunities, networking potential, and teaching curriculum. They have a growing and lively presence on 2nd Life (see below).

Social Networking

  • Facebook More and more colleges are using Facebook to connect with prospective and current students. Facebook is a social networking site that is highly customizable that features many options to restrict the level of privacy as you desire. You can use it to advertise your program or course very cheaply, to create groups for students, and invite students to events such as information sessions or extra-credit opportunities. CDE has a Facebook group here.
  • Second Life is a free, user-created 3D virtual environment where you can log in to interact with people from around the world. Many respected universities are creating learning environments using Second Life (2nd Life for short). You can visit CDE's Rhetorica Island any time.
  • eLearn @ UA is a blogging community for educators from around Alaska. You can create personal pages, groups, discussions, and blog posts to work collaboratively and meet new people with similar interests! Visit the CDE Faculty group here.

Professional Development Opportunities

  • EC&I 831 is a free open-access graduate level course that focuses on becoming more aware and thoughtful of web 2.0 tools for education. You can participate in the course as much or as little as you want, all for free!
  • The Act of Teaching is a free online seminar from The Derek Bok Center for Teaching & Learning at Harvard.
  • CRCD Roundtable discussions are held regularly by audio-conference. They include discussions on current topics, presentations, and faculty development sessions. Please contact Brighton Brooks at brighton.brooks@alaska.edu or Pete Pinney at pppinney@alaska.edu for more information.
