some useful tools/apps found recently

1. One of the problems I run into frequently while helping faculty is objectives for lessons. I found that this little tool does a great job in aiding with structure using the  Blooms Taxonomy: http://www.radiojames.com/ObjectivesBuilder/

2. Since i have to prepare a presentation on use of the Facebook for educational purposes i have found some possibly useful FB apps that I would like to share:

  • Podclass – If you are a student, professional or teacher who uses a course management system to access or manage your course content online, with Podclass you can now access all of your courses and content from within Facebook. It is pretty rudimentary and the downside is – there is no good text formatting options. However, word on the street is – if you use Moodle content management system and would like to offer your students and instructors access to their courses from within Facebook – now you can.
  • WorldCat -  Search for material available at libraries around the world to find help with your research.
  • Zoho Online Office – If your class is using Zoho for documents, spreadsheets, or presentations, then this app is an invaluable way to access them all through Facebook. An alternative to GoogleDocs.

3. And some more free tools for course development (most stolen from this guy http://elearninfo.com/:

  • xical.orgcreate web based screen shots, tutorials, include audio/video, rich media, animation, etc
  • Quandry – create web based action mazes, they claim it is sort of an interactive case study. i checked it out and it looks more like a cognitive tutor/survey/interactive quiz maker. downside: available only for Windows.
  • Camstudio – The closest system you can come to  that is similar to Camtasia &  some people say Captivate.
  • Xerte - Open source tools for e-learning developers and designers.  Can produce interactive learning materials.  Tech skills are intermediate.
  • Blender – 3D authoring tool that is really really good.
  • udutu – The course and simulation authoring tool does not have to be used with a specific LMS.
