What it Is

Spanning five full-days of hands-on, interactive activities using each participant's own course materials, iTeach is not designed for computer "geeks," but for practicing educators interested in transforming their teaching.

Curriculum

iTeach is based on a custom curriculum utilizing best practices from around the globe, emerging and established pedagogy, and many examples from practicing educators.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • The Understanding by Design reverse engineering framework
  • Effective use of Learning Management Systems and Elluminate Live!
  • Creating classroom community and with social software
  • Distributed classroom management and assessment
  • Second Life and virtual learning environments
  • Creating and maintaining one's own personal learning environment

Your Responsibilities

If you are selected to attend an iTeach seminar you will be expected to:

  1. Complete a few hours basic pre-seminar activities and prep before the seminar starts
  2. Come prepared with the class you are planning to teach and any materials you have created and gathered
  3. Participate for the five full days of hands-on activities, including completion of "homework" assignments during the seminar
  4. Participate in two followup sessions online where you will share:
    • how you are implementing what you learned at iTeach and
    • how you have shared some of what you have learned with a colleage

Travel, Accommodations, Stipends

iTeach is operating a bit differently this year: Instead of just one full-length seminar there are three; instructors from any MAU are eligible to attend any of the three sessions. The stipend has been inreased from $500 to $700 (assuming full participation).

If you are selected to attend an iTeach that is not local to you, CDE will pay for your plane fare to the offering campus. However, in order to attend iTeach you still must have the support of your campus, which is responsible for your stipend. Your campus is also responsible for hotel, and per-diem unless you are attending a local seminar that does not incur those expenses or you are paying for your own accommodations, in which case the campus is responsible only for the stipend funds.

Testimonials

The iTeach workshop is entering its fifth year, debuting last year in Homer, Kodiak, and Juneau in addition to its traditional home in Fairbanks. Seats have been limited and competition fierce. We are excited to have the opportunity to engage in four full-length offerings around the state this year, making the opportunity available to more faculty than ever before!

iTeach was explicitly conceived to promote a curriculum based on best practices that puts technology in service of desired outcomes and understandings. Evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive. Here's a sample:

"I went last year and LOVED it! [...] I would love to go again. I was on the edge of my seat the whole week! I would also recommend it to all full time faculty! The training is really that good."
[UAS Faculty Member]

"Thank you so much for such a wonderful week! I learned so much!"
[UAA Faculty Member]

"... Excellent organization of material that will be a great resource going forward."
[UAF Faculty Member]

"...It was a pleasant surprise that this academy is not only going to deal with the technology of learning, but the philosophy of learning as well. As someone without any formal education in teaching, it is very helpful."
[UAF Faculty Member]

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are all four iTeach sessions (in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Juneau) the same?

The curriculum of all the iTeach sessions is essentially the same, with the primary exception that in Juneau we will be teaching UAS Online as the basic LMS instead of Blackboard.

Q. Can I attend an iTeach that is not being held at the major campus I am associated with?

All iTeach sessions are open to instructors from any academic unit. Your home campus is responsible for providing funds for the stipend and, unless you are paying for it yourself, your travel and accommodations.

Q. I thought iTeach was an all-expsenses paid opportunity?

In the past, CDE and Statewide have covered all costs for iTeach attendees and due to funding limitations many instructors were turned away. In an effort to hold more sessions and extend the full iTeach opportunity to other campuses-- and to encourage an instructor's home campus to have a material stake in the training-- we now require that the applicants stipend and, if applicable, lodging and per-diem costs are sponsored by the home campus. CDE will cover air fare for attendees where applicable.

Q. What if I just want to pay my own way? I don't need the stipend!

Applicants can choose to pay for their own travel expenses, but the stipend is required and must be provided by an applicant's home campus or unit. This is not just an incentive for the attendee, but for the sponsoring agency.

Q. I teach for CDE-- will CDE sponsor my stipend? What about travel?

CDE will sponsor applicants who teach-- or are going to be teaching-- CDE courses. List 'Curt Madison' as the sponsoring agent.
